Sony America VP Wants Games To Stay On Discs
With all the commotion going on about how EA is limiting stuff to one time download codes for people that bought a game new get the content the ones that buy it used dont get the content. There are people that are just planning on not giving a 100% finished game anymore, instead planning on releasing DLC from the get go so that they can recoup losses from used video game sales. Here is what the Vice President of Sony American had to say with Gamasutra:
“You can talk about why DLC is important to help limit the used game business and to keep people holding onto [the game],” Dyer told Gamasutra.
“I’m all about that, too. I love that. But I want it on the disc so that 100 percent out there that can play this thing.”
“What are we, north of 70 percent on the network now? 73, I think. Microsoft probably the same,” he continued.
“[That's] still a significant number of people that aren’t able to get, whether they don’t have broadband, whether they just flat out can’t get on the network. Whether or not you do it, they’re not using it. I want it on the disc, that way when they buy it, they get it. So, if I can do that, that’s great.”
This isn’t just talking about a little expansion either, this is talking about releasing a 100% retail game via download, which I think is stupid.
Do you agree with the Sony VP on this?

Oh Jesus TITS! How did I miss this? I’m going to try very hard not to go on a crude rant right here, but this is right up there with all the “Wah wah piracy is killing us” bullcrap. Some of my favorite games I bought *new* because I picked up a previous title used at GameCrazy. They made money off me DIRECTLY BECAUSE of used game sales. Most people cannot afford 40, 50, 60 bucks for every game! I sure can’t. The used game market keep gamers gaming. Would they prefer that people just find other hobbies because they simply can’t afford to be gamers? Sure, some folks buy only used, but in my observation they’re not the majority. People still like to have that ‘new game smell’ thing, ya know?

One more point: They like to use the metric that 1 used game sale equals a LOST new game sale. Does anyone with a functioning brain cell actually believe that every kid who can afford to drop 15 bucks on a used game would have dropped 60 instead if he couldn’t find it used? Spare me.

I’m just happy that one of the game companies is kind of defending used games. Sure he agrees that used games hurt the industry, which I agree as well because in reality 1 used game does equal 1 lost new game sale, however in most cases I will buy a game new if the price difference is only $5. It’s stupid to buy a brand new game, used when you only save $5 on it. GameStop offers a great deal, you play the game and end up not liking it you can return it within 7 days. That’s why I buy so many games used because I can either try it out, or if I beat the game in 7 days and am done with it, return it. Which if the developer is going to charge me $60 for a game that wont last me at least 1 pay period then they shouldn’t charge me $60 for it to begin with.
Great example, I bought Dead Space new from Walmart for $20. It’s fun, however I think it will take me more than a week to beat. So since I also bought Brutal Legend used from GameStop which I can beat in a week I’m going to put more focus on beating Brutal Legend first so I can pick up another used game, or perhaps a new game that is only $20.
Now to touch base on the other thing I wanted to cover. DLC is a great thing. The people that bought the game new will probably buy DLC for the game if it was good. The ones that bought the game used may not, however the ones that bought it new should even out the ones that just bought the game used.
Or an easy fix would be the charge GameStop a LOW percentage on their used games as a royalty. Not too high as that is the way they make all their money and I don’t want a place going out of business for a stupid reason like that.
