PSPno – My Thoughts on the PSPgo

I see finger prints. Ewwwwwwww.
The PSPgo is set to be sold on October 1st at the price of $250 USD. Despite this hand held not being released yet it has already gotten quite a bit of less than positive attention. Gizmodo.com has already posted a review for it where they say “Four years later, my wife and I are closer than ever. But my beloved PSP sits on a shelf somewhere out of reach, a dusty artifact that I’ll neither play nor throw away. The Go will not fare any better by being a little bit smaller or ditching pesky UMDs. PSP2, I’ll be waiting for whenever you decide to show up and steal my heart again.” which pretty much sums up their entire review. The PSPgo has the same hardware internally, nothing has changed with that, it has 802.11b WiFi which is going to be way to slow for my liking, why can’t Sony release new technology with their new technology? You also can not multitask while downloading your 1.6gb game, and if your battery dies during this download (which is possible with the 4 hour 47 minute battery life) you have to start all over again. When the only positives that Gizmodo has for a device are “Your hands will get used to the new ergonomics” and “Squeezes into a jeans pocket” you know this is destine to fail if not fail epically.
Not only that but iFixit.com also posted a tear down of the PSPgo and it also doesn’t look very promising from the innards. The PSPgo has NO metal framework whatsoever in it. This means the PSPgo will rely on it’s plastic to keep it together. I don’t know about you but when I pay $250 for something it better be durable and not be made of cheap material. Not only that but the PSPgo also has that neat new sliding mechanism, pretty cool right? Well seeing as how they got cheap with the framework what is saying that the PSPgo will have a reliable sliding mechanism?
The only thing I’m excited about with the PSPgo being released is maybe I’ll buy a PSP (again) for a much cheaper price. Or maybe I’ll wait for Sony to release a hand held that is usefuly. Or maybe I will just bank on Microsoft entering into the portable console market.

I'd buy that.

I have a first and second generation PSP with about 45 UMD’s. When I’m out and about I always have one on me but I quickly got bugged by carrying around those UMDs, I hated carrying them around with me. So I bought a PSPGo, gotta tell ya, LOVE IT!!! Digital Downloads simply rock if you don’t want to carry anything. I love that they PSPGo lightweight and small, the screen still has an amazing image and the battery life is amazing, I played LBP for almost 6 hours on a recent flight I took.
I’m tired of hearing all of the hate for a device that so many people haven’t even tried to get to know or use, and messing with it for an hour or two doesn’t count. Original owners of the PSP act like this device was intended and marketed to them, but it wasn’t. It’s a product that caters to a different portion of the PSP market, those that want digital distribution.
