No this isn’t an upgrade that happened internally, the PS3 does still have the same amount of RAM in it before. However due to firmware updates the PS3′s operating system now uses 50mb of memory rather than 120mb. While this is not a major increase in memory if you are talking in an upgrade sense it is a pretty good amount of extra memory just by fixing up the operating system.
Because of this developers can now add extra effects resolution or dynamic lights, really more in the art area than the design and game play area of game development. But still our games will look a little bit awesomer (yes that is a word, but no one has come to accept that yet)
So hats off to Sony, they did a fine job at dropping that OS footprint down 50mb of the last few months. They are sneaky but in a good way.
