I had my manager at work come up to me asking if I had seen the pictures of the PlayStation 4 yet. I replied back to him “no….?” I guess he had gotten confused by the concept art someone had posted (picture above) of what the PS4 could look like. So the easy answer to my question in the title is simply no. However I figured I’d delve into this subject a little bit more, and give you all a good idea of when the PlayStation 4 might come out.
We see a new game console roughly ever 4 to 6 years. If I am correct on this release date of the PlayStation 3, it would be November 11th 2010 thru November 11th 2012 before the PS 4 would see the light of day. However Sony has been talking about how they want to give the PlayStation 3 a 10 year life span so we could have to wait until November 11th 2016 before we see the game system hit store shelves. Also don’t forget the world is ending December, 2012…
Some of you might be saying right now “HEY 2010 IS NEXT YEAR!!!” Yes it is, you are correct. However usually before a console is launched it has at least a year of exposure before being released. Usually the next generation of game systems are announced officially at E3 in the month of May or June. So that would give the PlayStation 4 very little time to build up hype so 2010 is out of the picture – almost guaranteed.
Is there still a possibility for the PS4 to come out in 2011 though? I’d say the chance of that happen is slightly better than it coming out in 2010, but first people need to buy HDTV’s as there aren’t a whole lot of people that are playing on HDTV’s from what my source is telling me. So I’ll go ahead and say I highly doubt it will be launched by then either.
Sony really doesn’t have to rush things with the PlayStation 4. Xbox 720 (which is actually going to be Natal if you read through my source) isn’t going to be that big of an update. It will just be a controller that lets you not use a controller. I have to say while I am bummed about the PS 4 not coming out for quite some time (seriously, you can expect waiting til 2016) I am just happy that the console makers are finally hitting that plateau where the game makers can’t really push the games that much further, and because of that we don’t need new hardware every 4 to 6 years. We can keep our game systems for a decade before needing fresh gear, and to be honest, that’s fine by me.

I don’t think so but we will see. I think the PS4 will not come out b4 2012, Sony is just barely getting back on track and unless Microsoft really pushes for a new console there won’t be any new consoles anytime soon. Nintendo is making a killing still, even though games sales are way down, console sales are still #1 in the world. Nobody cares if the Wii is HD or not. Nice article

I doubt 2016, sony has stated in multiple interviews that they try to attain a 10 year life span of their consoles (they actually told game informer a month or two ago that they plan on using the same cycle as they did with the ps2 with the ps3). ps2 is still being made and was released in 2000 (new games are still coming out for it, just not as frequently as before, and they are usually multiplatformed only) so technically its cycle still has not ended, and probably wont till 2010. Playstation 1 was released in 1995 (1994 release in japan) so that was 5-6 years, they followed the same plan with the playstation 1 that they did with the playstation 2.
Playstation 3 was first made released in 2006, a little after 6 years after the ps2. which would cause me to believe that a 2012-2013 release is more realistic then 2016. because they would be able to begin playstation 4′s cycle while taking the last four years to end the ps3 cycle exactly like their plan with the ps2.
I’m not saying I’m positive that this will happen, just saying its pretty realistic to believe that 2012 would be when sony will release the system if the follow the plan they used with their previous 2 consoles. which, like i said before, they stated they were going to do.
