MAG Set To Be Released January 26th

You know that game that is going to bring down the internet? The one that promises to let you play with 255 other people (for a total of 256 players) at the same time, in the same game. If you don’t then the game is MAG. It’s a first person shooter exclusive the the PS3 that will be redesigning online multiplayer games as we know it. Yeah sure I do play World of Warcraft and in that there could be hundreds of people logged on to the server at any given time. But we’re talking about 256 people playing on the same map, with the same goal. Can you say FRAG?

Just because of that doesn’t mean I’m not skeptical. How can you have 256 people playing the same game, especially it being a console game that relies heavy on a players latency. I’m really not sure how well this work since I’ve played 16 player games that were just ungodly laggy (Halo). However if they are able to make this work I will probably have to go out and purchase a PS3 just so I can experience this.

Now if this does not work, and you are not able to have insane carnage, just remember who had huge doubts about this working. Anyway, MAG is set to be released January 26th for us state side and January 29th for all of you people that aren’t American… That sounded really bad, but oh well, every once in a while I like to live up to my American ways.

  1. actually, not everyone one the map has the same goal (well they do, but different means in attaining it) , each team will have different squads (alpha, beta, charlie, delta… etc) not sure how many squads… but the goals are going to evolve as the teams reach their objective, if one team manages to blow up an AA cannon, they might be sent to help out another team complete their objective, or they might be sent to sabotage an enemy team from completing theirs… in the end, yes the goal of each squad will be the same, but the objectives to get to that goal are going to differ from team to team. Maps are apparently extremely massive too, i read an extensive review of it from a demo they had at E3 (they actually had 256 players playing at once throughout the show) and it looks and sounds amazing.

I too am hoping they are going to be able to have stable and lagless servers with that many people on a relativly small map (you compared it to wow, and you underestimated the amount of people on a wow server, most MMO servers host about 2000-3000 at any given time, not a couple hundred, but an MMO like wow doesnt have to process as much information every time you use an ability, its a simple numbers thing. when an fps game senses someone shooting, its got alot more involved, where the bullet is going, when the gun has to flash, how much damage the bullet does compared to where you shoot the person, if its an explosion how far is the radius, how many people are in that radius, and how much damage does each person in that radius take, and the list can go on an on)… wow is simple math, any fps games is quite a bit more advance… I hope they can make it lagless, that will be awsome… but at first i have a feeling it will be a bumpy road, and i think it will take them a little while to refine it to be perfect.

  2. Well they are using PS3′s in a server farm for their servers so processing power isn’t an issue. The biggest thing I’m worried about is you have 256 people playing at once in the same game. If you have a laggy person what will happen? Will it be like Halo 3 where the laggy person can potentially fuck up the entire game or will it be like Modern Warfare 2 where they just drop. If it’s like Halo 3′s set up then it will fail miserably, if they have it set up like MW2 then it shouldn’t be an issue.
