How To: Set Your PS3 NAT Type To Open

It’s a pretty common issue I have noticed while playing Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3. I want to join my friends party and while trying to it says I am unable to. I invite him to join my party, and he is in my party within seconds. Why can he join my party but I can’t join his? Simple, his NAT type is not open while mine is. Since this issue does seem to be fairly common I figured I’d go ahead and address it by showing you how to open your NAT up, it’s quick, simple and almost painless.

Go into your router set-up.

Since manufacturers make their products slightly different you will have to look up how to get into your router. I use a Linksys router, and you get into your set up by doing the following:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Type in http://192.168.1.1/ into your address bar.
  3. Username: Blank
    Password: admin
  4. Your in!

Now for me I’ve since changed my password on my router because it’s not the best way to keep your network secure. I suggest you change yours as well.

Open Up Your NAT!!

This is a very easy thing to do once you are in your set up. Again I will give you the steps in an easy to read format.

  1. Locate Applications and Gaming (on some routers it may be called something like Port Range Forwarding)
  2. You are going to want to forward the following ports:
    80 – TCP
    5223 – TCP
    3478 – UDP
    3658 – UDP
    3479 – UDP
  3. Assign an IP Address which is the same for all of these. It can be any number from 1 and 255, I suggest you pick a number not in use. For example, 1 is most likely in use and while 2 probably isn’t why not use 2 digits such as 50?
  4. Save Settings

Alright after that your NAT should be open and you should have much easier times playing your PS3 games with friends. For a little added assistance I took a screen shot of my port range forwards.

Ehm.. shouldn’t the last byte of the IP address be that of the PS3 and not some random number? How can this possibly work?

You set the D Class on your PS3 to the one that is set on your router. That’s how it works.

Did you make sure that the router is still configured the same way? The power going out could have caued your router to reset itself. Also check with your PS3 as well that it’s settings are the same.
Hopefully this fixes your problem, because providing the ports are open your NAT type should be open as well.

Oh one more thing. make sure on your PS3 that you manually set up the IP address and set it up to be the same IP address you assigned on your routers ports.
