100Mbps Broadband in 100 Million Homes or DIE! Or so says the FCC..

It’s been quite some time since the FCC had spoken about how they want faster interwebs for all of us. However they are now looking to get 100 millions homes hooked up to a 100Mbps (MEGA BITS PER SECOND) broadband connection. Sure that’s 10 times slower than the Google internet but none the less it’s a big step up when you compare it to any other residential broadband. (Although the FCC has spoken with Google about their plan, so perhaps Google will get major government funding and maybe we will see more homes with the Google ISP) I think the fastest I’ve seen so far is QWEST and they aren’t available in many states at all, however they do have affordable prices for pretty fast connections.

Here are some of the rules the FCC is planning on following when deploying some faster interwebs for everybody:

· A recommendation for improving the highly successful E-Rate program — which made Internet connections in America’s classrooms and libraries a reality — so that kids and teachers can have a 21st century educational experience that is the envy of the world.
· A recommendation to modernize the FCC’s rural telemedicine program to connect thousands of additional clinics and break down bureaucratic barriers to a telehealth future.
· A recommendation to take the steps necessary to deploy broadband to accelerate a smart grid.
· A recommendation to develop public/private partnerships to increase Internet adoption, and ensure that all children can use the Internet proficiently and safely — with programs like NCTA’s new A+ program playing a helpful role.
· A recommendation to free up a significant amount of spectrum in the years ahead for ample licensed and unlicensed use.
· A recommendation for lowering the cost of broadband build-out — wired and wireless — through the smart use of government rights of way and conduits.
· A recommendation for creating an interoperable public safety network to replace the currently broken system.

Vague it is. I just hope that they realize people who live out in the country own computers, not only that but we are lonely since we live out in the country and want to download porn extra fast. I am very bitter when it comes to ISP’s that only offer broadband in a town but they completely ignore those of us out in the country. Sure it is less dense, but there are subdivisions, run the line to them and while you do that branch it off to us as well. It makes no sense why they can’t do it, other than money of course.

Anyway got a little sidetracked there. I’m not sure when they will get this many homes such a fast internet connection. I would imagine it wont be by the end of the year though. I think they need to make it a priority to just make sure every single American has access to a broadband (hardline) connection. Sure I have wireless internet, but my download speed is affected  by everyone else using the same tower as me. So I can get some pretty shitty download and upload speeds, usually when I need to download something fast.
